JAD Feedback

Good work Mark. You have completed all tasks to deadline. Improve presentation though - lots of images missing!

Your key conventions analysis is too short - improve.

Also, post your focus group video and drafting asap please.

Magazine Sketch

Front Cover

I am choosing to have a well groomed man wearing a shirt and tie as this looks professional and will cause the magazine to be taken more seriously by readers. I also captured the man pointing his finger as this pose is intriguing and attracts readers to look further into the magazine. I have chosen to have one person on the front of the cover as i feel this is less cluttered and allows the reader to concentrate further on the features advertised on the page.

Contents page

On the contents page i have included three images to make the page attractive and interesting to the reader whilst not over crowding the page. This allows the reader to focus on the features list which will inform them about the contents of the whole magazine.

Double Page Spread

In the double page spread i have concentrated the text to one page but placed an image in the centre of the page to make it more interesting. On the second page i have got four images representing four different genres. These images are designed to flow as though they are interactive, for example in the top left image the man is looking straight at the reader. In the top right the R&B person is looking down at the image of the POP representative below him. The POP representative is looking to his right at the girl who is representing ROCK and she is looking back at the POP representative. This interactive image should be intriguing to the viewer and cause them to stop and study the four images.

Title Block

Title block analysis and design

Q magazine

This title block only has one letter, which is the letter “Q”. The style of the letter “Q” is very stylish and is in the colour white, with a light shade of red for the background. This makes it stand out and looks bold. Using one letter for the title of the magazine makes it easy for the reader to remember as it is a short title and looks appealing.

The ways in which they have made it look appealing is by the style and colour and what it could symbolise. By using these concepts for the title, it could have an effect on their target market. This magazine would be aimed for the age group of 15-44 years old, and also would be aimed at the more commercial music for people who don’t listen to alternative music.

The letter “Q” could stand for “Quality”, “Quirky”, “Questions” or “Queen”. This could attract a number of people for a variety of reasons. One of these reasons could be because of the content that the reader thinks will be in the magazine.

NME Magazine

The “NME” magazine title block uses capital letters, which immediately catches the reader’s eye. The colour of the writing is bright red which makes it stand out compared to other titles that could be black or white which could be considered as dull.

The colour red is associated with excitement, love and danger. These are all different things, however it could represent that this magazine is diverse and covers all different types of music. The letters “NME” have a black and white edging around them, which adds to the tension which is draws to the reader. The black and white connotes offering information as a common term is “I saw it in black and white”.

There is a sub title below the letters “NME” is very bland compared to the main title and also uses a smaller text size, which could mean that it is not as important. The sub title “NEW MUSIC EXPRESS” connotes that the information is hot of the press, so it could be seen as the most up to date magazine available.

Rolling Stone

The title block “RollingStone” uses red writing, which attracts the reader’s eye and also projects a positive image onto the magazine as the colour red could be associated with Love and excitement. The style of the writing is very stylish which tells the reader what type of genre the magazine is.

The style and colour of the magazine could reflect the target audience. This is achieved by the smooth, and curvy style of writing which could connote that it Is not a very serious magazine. This magazine would be aimed at younger people between the ages of 14-25 years old.

The writing has a 3D effect which also makes it different to other magazines.

Above are three examples of mast heads from indie magazines which is the same genre as my magazine. In these three mastheads red is the colour of choice. This is probably because it is vibrant and attracts the eye of the viewer. I have considered this along with the suggestions of my focus group who felt that pale, pastel colours would attract readers. I have chosen yellow for the letters of my masthead as this is a pale, pastel colour but, just like red, it is vibrant and attracts the viewers' eyes.

My magazine title block

I have made this title block for my own for my magazine which is called "MC Music". MC music is a magazine aimed at 19-25 year olds. My magazine displays information about the indie genre type of music. However, I would still like to maintain a professional audience.

Both of these facts can be seen, by the style and colour of the title block that i have created. The colour that i have used is black which can be seen as very professional and simple. This could attract the more affluent audience.
When considering the genre of the magazine, I have used a very modern style, which is more casual.

The MC reader (Magazine reader profile)

Music Magazine Reader Profile

MC Music Magazine

MC Music Magazine readers are at the heart of the magazine itself. They are the ones who set the latest fashion trends and make the newest bands the greatest of all. They also make the happening music happen and the cool products cool within their peer group. MC magazine readers don’t consider themselves as a fan of just one music genre. These genres could be Indie, Pop, Rock or even Classical.

They are all diverse in their own ways which projects onto the magazine. The difference between MC Music Magazine readers and other music readers is how individual they are, yet so diverse and defined by their positive attitude. The median age of a MC Magazine reader is 19- 64% male, 36% female and tend to be single.
They have a high disposable income and a high propensity to spend it on: Clothes, Music or The latest mobile and MP3 player.

Front cover and Contents page analysis

Analysis of key conventions

One of the key conventions of the Rolling stones magazine is the font used for the masthead. This is always in serif font, using a capital R and a capital S with the remainder of letters in each word in smaller font and joined together.

The colour of the font can vary from white, beige, red, yellow, grey, green and blue as can be seen in the examples attached. When white or red are used they have a black drop shadow. Red always has a white outline.

Each Rolling Stone magazine cover will display a central figure or a group who are popular and will attract readers. The image will take up most of the page and may be either behind the Masthead or in front of the Masthead (see images attached featuring Bradd Pitt and Prince). The front cover will also display the name of the person or group in the image and this will be in clear large letters, in a variety of coloured fonts.

The magazine features both male and female artists on its cover (see attached images of covers featuring Bono and Pink) this attracts both male and female readers, increasing the target audience.

Another key convention Is the information and interviews with  current artists. This is attractive to customers and maintains customer loyalty. Key conventions also include updates on what's popular in the world of music. See attached image of Brad Pitt cover.

Another key convention is that all the articles in the magazine are advertised on the front cover. This helps to maintain customer loyalty as the regular readers know that they can see the contents of the magazine at a glance.

The key convention related to the contents page of the Rolling Stones magazine is that articles are
listed with a heading, followed by the script describing the article. The contents page also gives the page number for each article and every contents page contains images relating to the articles in the magazine. Put in image of contents page.

Business Magazine Analysis

Magazine Analysis

The denotation of this magazine cover shows students, or colleagues, well presented in a green area with trees in the background. The style of text that they have used is very simple and smart. They are also smiling and are looking happy in the photo.

This connotes that they could be well educated by the way they are dressed, the expressions on their faces could mean that they are happy and are good friends. Most of the people in the picture are dressed casually, apart from one woman who looks more formal and smart in a black trouser suit. This woman looks like she may have just arrived from the office or in fact she could be the tutor of the other five students. Her dress code sets her apart from the rest of the group and applies some possible hierarchy. Though the other five are dressed casually, they are also dressed smartly which is appropriate as they are on the cover of a business magazine, not a music or fashion magazine. The suited woman’s posture could also indicate her more formal approach as she is standing with her hands clasped in front of her while the other five people in the photograph have a much more relaxed posture with their hands in their pockets or resting on their laps.

In contrast, the remaining five characters look more casual, like they are enjoying the sunshine. The green area that they are in could connote that they enjoy one and others company as they are spending their leisure time together.

Mise en scene:

There are no props used in this magazine cover, this could be because they have got an appealing setting in the background. The people who are sitting in the picture are using logs as seats, keeping the theme very natural by not introducing any objects, which would not naturally be found in a green area.

They have not used any verbal communication in this picture. However the script summarises some of the key information, which is in the business journal. The title of the journal is clear and bold and describes which volume it is.

The choice of colour for the journal title is in keeping with the natural theme as it is a sky blue colour and blends well with the background green of the grass and trees.

The magazine has used a form of front lighting, which gives a sense of more sunshine. This increase in the brightness of the picture makes the reader feel up beat and makes the journal attractive and enticing to the reader.

In summary, the lighting, setting, props, costumes and non-verbal communication all have a major influence on the reader, making the journal attractive and appealing.
